The Modern London Counsellor Tour brings together education professionals from across the United States and Canada to explore London's diverse higher education sector.

Hosted by London Metropolitan University, in partnership with the University of Roehampton, SOAS University of London, University of Greenwich and Middlesex University London, the programme combines campus visits, networking opportunities and cultural experiences—all while staying in the heart of Central London.

About London Metropolitan University

London Metropolitan University is proud to host and coordinate the Modern London Counsellor Tour.

Located across three campuses in Central London—Holloway, Aldgate and Shoreditch—London Met is home to more than 12,000+ students from over 140+ nationalities. The University is recognised for its commitment to widening participation, social inclusion and student sucess.

The University offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees across six academic schools:

Counsellors from North America are supported by Tara Murphy, Regional Manager (North America). Based in British Columbia, Canada, Tara regularly travels across the United States and Canada, visiting schools, meeting counsellors and supporting students and families throughout the application process.

The Modern London Counsellor Tour is designed for education professionals based in the United States and Canada who support students considering higher education opportunities.

We welcome applications from:

High school and secondary school counsellors
Independent educational consultants
Heads or Directors of Counselling
District, school board and regional education staff who support college counselling and post-secondary advising
Staff from charities and non-profit organisations supporting university access

We welcome professionals from all US states and Canadian provinces and territories.

Whether you're an experienced UK adviser or completely new to UK higher education, we'd love to hear from you. We aim to bring together a diverse cohort representing different regions, school types and levels of UK experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What costs are covered by the programme?

A place on the Modern London Counsellor Tour includes accommodation in a centrally located London hotel for the duration of the programme, visits to all five partner universities, meals, organised networking and cultural activities, internal transportation throughout the week, and airport transfers (via public transport) at the designated arrival and departure dates.

What costs are my responsibility?

Participants are responsible for arranging and paying for their return flights to and from the UK, travel insurance, any visa or UK entry requirements, and any personal expenses or activities outside the official programme.

How do I apply?

Applications open in early October and close at the end of October. You'll be asked to complete an application form outlining your role, school/company, experience and interest in joining the tour.

When will I hear if I've been selected?

Applications are reviewed collaboratively by representatives from all five partner universities. We aim to notify successful applicants by mid-November, allowing plenty of time to arrange travel.

How are participants selected?

We aim to create a diverse cohort of education professionals from across the United States and Canada, representing a range of institutions, locations, and UK higher education experience.

Do I need experience advising students about the UK?

Not at all. Whether you're an experienced UK adviser or completely new to UK higher education, we encourage you to apply. One of the aims of the programme is to build confidence and knowledge in supporting students considering studying in the UK.

Will there be an information session before applications close?

Yes. We'll host an online webinar before the application deadline where prospective applicants can learn more about the programme, hear what to expect and ask any questions before submitting an application.

Will there be support before travelling to London?

Absolutely. Successful participants will be invited to a pre-departure webinar covering everything you need to know before arriving in the UK, including travel, accommodation, the programme and what to pack.

Will I stay in the same hotel throughout the tour?

Yes. Participants stay in one centrally located London hotel for the duration of the programme. This provides a convenient base for exploring the city and travelling together to each partner university via public transport.

Can I bring my partner or a guest?

As the Modern London Counsellor Tour is a professional development programme with a full schedule of activities, we ask that only selected participants attend. Unfortunately, partners or guests cannot be accommodated as part of the programme.

I've already visited London. Is the tour still worthwhile?

Absolutely. While you'll have opportunities to experience London's culture and landmarks, the primary focus of the programme is to develop your understanding of UK higher education, visit five universities, meet current students and staff, and build professional relationships with counsellors from across North America.

Beyond the university visits, participants have opportunities to experience London's neighbourhoods, green spaces, food scene and world-famous attractions, giving them first-hand insight into what makes London such an inspiring place for students from around the world.

USA and Canada events

We have a local representative based in British Columbia, Canada, who travels to school and college fairs, large fairs (eg. NACAC) and conferences.
